The Nadal Genealogical Ancestry

The Nadal family coat of Arms is shown to the left.

I am amazed at the many Nadal families that we can find living around the world today.  I was always under the impression that my family name Nadal was very rare.  Although, it could still be considered rare I want to tell you that in my research I have found Nadals living in Puerto Rico, Spain, Mallorca, Cuba, England, the United States, Mexico, Venezuela, Argentina, etc..

During the 2005 Tennis championship the world became aware of Rafael Nadal.  I was very happy for his winning but more so for putting our family name on the map.

In Puerto Rico the name of Rafael Martinez Nadal became very famous and his name can be heard mentioned in songs... he was an attorney that distinguished himself for his efficacy in winning court trials.  Some of the songs make mention that the judges would tremble when they saw Martinez Nadal walk into their court rooms!

In the United States dating back to June 1875 we find Thomas W. Nadal the son of Benjamin Franklin Nadal and Jerusha (Richey) Nadal.  He was a professor and President of Drury College in Springfield, MO in 1917.

The name Nadal has been recorded in British history since the time when the Anglo-Saxons ruled over the region. Such name was given to someone who was a maker of needles. The surname Nadal is derived from the Old English word Naedlere, which means needler. This in turn derived from the Old English word Naedl, which means needle.  It was first found in the county Shropshire, where this distinguished family was seated since ancient times.

Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: John Needler, who settled in Virginia in 1679; Benjamin Needler, who arrived in Virginia in 1741; Joseph Needle, age 40; who settled in Philadelphia in 1753.

Some spellings of the name Nadal include: Needle, Needles, Needell, Nelder Needdele, Nadal, Nadle, Needler, Nedler, Nedlere, Neelder, Neldere, Nadler, Nadlere, Nayldor, Needlemaker, Neilder, and many more.

In Barcelona, Spain you will find a farm with the name NADAL DE LA BOADELLA that was founded at the beginning of the 16th century in Penedès land. A parchment signed by the notary Francesch Berthomeu dated 1510 verifies the existence of a "finca" (farm) in the town land of Torrelavit under ownership of Pere Nadal. Finca Nadal has never stopped cultivating vines and making wine, not even during the difficult years of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) when part of the land was taken over in order to construct an airfield.

.......more will be added
