Dear Senator Barack Obama:

First I’d like you to know that I have been supporting your campaign from the start.  I was present at the rally at Saint Peters College in Jersey City, NJ and came very close to shaking hands with you.  I have contributed to your campaign what I could afford, so far $375, and have also helped in the campaign by calling Latino voters in Virginia and Maryland before those primaries.  I will be calling Spanish speaking voters in Texas and Ohio this weekend.  I am committed to you being elected the next President of our great nation.  I know you are sincere when you say that all of us together will CHANGE this nation to what it once was and repair the bad image of the Bush years.

I am one of the organizers of www.PuertoRico2038.com a website that is promoting the celebration of a referendum that would give the people of Puerto Rico the opportunity to exercise their right to self determination.  This referendum would be unique and different than previous ones because it does not allow the vote to be contaminated by the three fanatical political factions that have not yet produced a clear mandate of FREE self determination.

The issue of the status of Puerto Rico is one that can be settled rather quickly and in the best interests of the United States.  As President of The United States you will have the opportunity of going into the history books as the President that made it possible for the people of Puerto Rico to exercise their inalienable right of self determination.  There hasn’t been a President yet that has dealt a solution to this embarrassing and nagging issue.  The people of Puerto Rico have never had that opportunity.  That right was first negated by Spain and it has been continuously negated by the U.S. since 1898.

I believe that as the President you can issue an executive order directing Congress to stop the shenanigans once and for all and force a referendum so that the people can vote for Independence or Statehood.  There is really no need for any other referendums in between and the idea of a Constitutional Convention would unnecessary delay the resolution of this problem.  Additionally, including the choice of continuing the Commonwealth as it is known today would contradict the objective of the referendum of giving the people the opportunity of ending the territorial/colonial status which has been imposed on them.  The only two choices that would end this colonial/territorial status are Independence or Statehood.

Knowing the fanatical mentality of the people of PR and how they have been brainwashed it becomes necessary to make sure that the referendum/plebiscite is not tainted by the three political parties.  The people have to understand that voting for independence has nothing to do with the PIP (Puertorican Independence Party) and that voting for statehood has nothing to do with the PNP (New Progressive Party).  This should be a very serious attempt to give the people their first real exercise of FREE self determination.  In order to maintain the integrity of the self determination referendum the undertaking of this referendum should be done by a neutral organization not affiliated in any way to the existing political parties of the island including the existing pro-commonwealth government.  Giving the people of PR the opportunity to decide between these two alternatives will expedite solving this nagging issue which would provide the US a save face opportunity to show the world the good news.

Given the evolution of politics in PR; I believe that the people would opt for Statehood with the expectation that Congress would admit PR as the next state of the union.  The final decision of admittance rests with the Congress which we would hope that is expeditiously decided.  In the very likely event that Congress opts to deny admitting PR into the union the next available option would be to grant PR its independence.  It’s anticipated that PR can and should be granted its independence by default once Congress denies statehood.  An independent PR would be beneficial to both the US and the people of PR.  We know that it’d be to the best interests of the US to ‘stand by’ the new nation of Puerto Rico with all the necessary assistance so that we can together create a workable economy that will be able to openly compete in the international world.  We can expect to need some financial assistance during the early stages of transformation.  This early investment by the US is one that in the long run will be beneficial to the U.S. because once the PR economy is up and running the US will no longer have to fund programs which will be to your economic advantage.

It’s of the utmost need to expedite this referendum and to begin all the logistical preparations to guide the island of Puerto Rico into its final development as a state or as an independent nation.

The solution to this nagging issue would provide the US a step in the right direction and the opportunity to reinforce, in the eyes of the international community, the principles of democracy for which it stands.

Sincerely,

Organizer of www.PuertoRico2038.com
