News Brief - Vatican approves new English translations for constant parts of Mass
Washington (CNS) — The Vatican has given its approval to a new English-language translation of the main constant parts of the Mass, but Catholics in the pew are unlikely to see any of the approved changes at Masses for a while to allow for catechesis on the reasons for the revisions. The approved text, sent to the Vatican for “recognitio,” or confirmation, after a June 2006 vote by the U.S. bishops in Los Angeles, involves translation of the penitential rite, Gloria, creed, Eucharistic prayers, Eucharistic acclamations, Our Father and other prayers and responses used daily. But it is only the first of 12 units into which the third edition of the Roman Missal has been divided for translation purposes. It includes most of the texts used in everyday celebration of the Mass including responses to the celebrant by people participating in a liturgy. “In terms of the people’s part, it’s not going to be too much of an adjustment,” Bishop Arthur J. Serratelli of Paterson, NJ, chairman of The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Divine Worship, told Catholic News Service on July 25. “It is a refinement of the language, a clearer theological language. Not much of the people’s part is changed, and I think once or twice after they use it, they will hardly notice the change,” he said. While the changes have been approved, Bishop Serratelli said it would be a while before they become part of the regular worship at Mass. “I’m hoping for two years,” he said. “I’m an optimist.”

News Briefs - Catholics teach peace building to both sides in Philippine war
DAVAO, Philippines (CNS) — In this land bloodied by decades of war, text messages can stop rumors, save lives, and build peace. Staffers of Catholic Relief Services have learned this in recent months while serving as intermediaries in the high-stakes drama of war and peace on the southern island of Mindanao. The overseas relief and development arm of the U.S. Catholic community, CRS has worked in the Philippines for over six decades. But instead of traditional agricultural projects and relief work, in the last ten years its focus in Mindanao has shifted to peace-building — helping the protagonists in a lengthy conflict find avenues to peace, even in the midst of continued fighting. The trust CRS staffers have established with all parties in the Mindanao conflict means they have occasionally received text messages from one side asking about the intentions of the other. After checking it out, they’ve sent back a reply, heading off a military response that could have meant disaster for civilians caught in the crossfire.

News Brief - Bishops issue ritual book for ‘quinceañera’ celebrations
WASHINGTON (CNS)— “Quinceañera”, the coming-of -age celebration for girls turning 15 years old, has long been a tradition for Latino families in the United States and a number of Spanish-speaking countries as a rite of passage from childhood to adolescence. The custom expresses thanksgiving to God for the gift of life and asks for a blessing for the years ahead. On September 19, the U.S. Bishops published the bilingual “Order of the Blessing on the Fifteenth Birthday,” designed to help U.S. communities celebrate this ritual within and outside Mass, according to an announcement on its release. In a statement, Jesuit Fr. Allan Deck, executive director of the USCCB’s Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church, emphasized the importance of developing a ritual that “helps Latino Catholics celebrate their cultural heritage and build new bridges to other Catholics in their communities.” The “quinceanera” ritual book may be ordered on line at www.usccbpublishing.org.
