Responding to God's Call
Here
is the account of the personal journey of Father Hermes Diaz Vargas, ordained on May 23, 2015, that led him to hear and answer God's call to the priesthood. Let us pray for him and also pray that his generous and faith-filled life inspire our young men to be open to listening for a call to priesthood. The photos and stories below are from the May 13, 2015 Issue of the Catholic Advocate and from his parish St. Michael's Church.

At the beginning, I was so afraid to say yes to God,” Fr. Diaz, 38, explained. Although he fell “in love with the Eucharist” at age 7 in his hometown of San Bernardo in Tolima, Colombia, he was hesitant to answer “yes” to the call. “I felt the presence of God in my life since I was very young, around 6 - 10 years old. I saw many priests in my town, and I said to myself that I would like to be like them some day.”
While studying financial administration in college, Fr. Diaz would find solace by visiting the university’s chapel. “My best moments were spending hours without words, contemplating Jesus in His sanctuary.”
Fr. Diaz entered the seminary in Colombia before attending Immaculate Conception Seminary. “It was not easy to get a new country, culture, and a new language, especially at the beginning of my thirties, but the Spirit of God helped me a lot; God breaks the walls and makes bridges, because He wants all His children find their mission, their destination.”
Fr. Diaz celebrated his first Mass at Saint Stephen Parish in Kearny on May 24, where he also served as a deacon. He will celebrate his first Mass at St. Michael's on Saturday, May 30 at 5:30 PM.
Here
at Saint Vincent de Paul we received the good news as published on the Advocate issue of October 2015 about the immediate transfer to our parish of Father Hermes. We consider ourselves blessed by the Holy Spirit for having sent us Fr. Hermes to serve the faithful of our parish.

On your mark - get ordained - go serve the Lord

Parish celebration of Father Hermes belated Birthday
and his 2nd Anniversary of Ordination
Sunday May 21, 2017 at Saint Vincent de Paul Church Hall
Dear Father Hermes - How time flies.  Two years ago you came to our parish as a freshly ordained priest.  Today our parish comes together to celebrate your Bday and your 2 year of Ordination. We can without any doubt say that your first two years of priesthood with us have been a Godsend blessing.  We gained a new priest, fresh out of the seminary, that was eager to put into practice his long years of formation to the priesthood.  I am sure many remember your early days here.  I am sure many have noticed that you have not changed the good and the holiness way of celebrating Mass you brought here from the seminary, especially at the solemn moment when you elevate the Consecrated Host and present it to the congregation and say the words “This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world”.   It’s precisely that mark of a good and holy priest that we want to encourage you to never change.
Thank you Father Hermes for being our Priest and our friend.  God Bless You.
