The law in NJ is that all residents are entitled to one copy of their credit report every year from each of the three major Credit Reporting Bureaus. To obtain your free copy call the following numbers:

1. TRANSUNION 1 800 888-4213

2. EQUIFAX 1 800 685-1111

3. EXPERIAN 1 888 397-3742
Some tips about these calls:

some of these calls are lengthy and it is usually towards the end of the call that you will hear the prompt to request your FREE (legislated) credit report

stay on the line and do not respond to any prompts other than those that are associated with your FREE report

you will be prompted for your social security number, your zip code, your numeric address, and or your two digit year of birth

Transunion requires you to speak and spell into the phone your first name, last name, social sec number, your address, your home telephone number, etc.

if you make a mistake and can not complete the process hang up and try again

Please be aware that there are hundreds of scams out there offering FREE credit reports. Often times you wind up paying for something that it's already FREE. You have to request your copy of your legislated credit report yourself by calling the above numbers. If you request your credit report thru a third party (scam) chances are that you will have to pay.
